Mines 3.8 GB about.
Maybe they remove things from the dat file occasionally, so that newer installs don't download them any more but older ones that got them while they were live content still have them.

Find the sound you want, right click it and "Export Raw Data"
Then save it somewhere.

Yeah, though one wonders how to access the .dat file to get to said piece; this thread is filled with people exploring the .dat, but woefully short of people explaining how to do so.

There's a few replies on the first couple pages linking to an archive with the GWDatBrowser. It has an executable, and the source for the thing. Just run the executable and you'll be going, most people probably won't be interested in the source code.

If you've installed GW client with any CD prior to Nightfall, you're using a "bloated DAT" version of the game. There's no different other than the bigger DAT, really. The only way to fix this is to install the game with Nightfall CD (DVD) or newer and do -image. Optimal DAT size is currently at 3.54gb.
The reason for this (according to an official answer from Anet's developer from a long time ago) is that Prophecies (and probably Factions too) installer contains some bugs that will cause the DAT file to accumulate some redundant data in it, resulting in a larger DAT file (the redundant data are from Prophecies CD of course). Normally it would eventually shrink down with time (again, according to Anet). But you can do as mentioned above just to fix the problem right away.
Back then, somebody did post a way to tell newer installers to "salvage" the usable data from your current DAT file and make a new, unbloated one without re-downloading. But I can't remember the exact step, just that it has something to do with telling the installer to use the data source (which normally would be from the CD) from your DAT file instead.
Hope this help clearing it up.

Are you sure? I reinstalled last week and have .56, not .54.
RO2 = Ragnarok Online 2? They look like 3D Gaia avatars.

Well, I'd say small variations like that can happen. Mine was -image for the newest update and (gasp) I reinstalled the game using Nightfall DVD just this Saturday.

The icon for items in your bags are downloaded on-demand. So file-size variation is normal and expected.

Hardly. Pratically every single texture in the game is in there. It is just a matter of using discression to only post what is "interesting."

Some new stuff:
New textures for animals (ox, snake, tiger, pig). Oddly they aren't in color but more a sepia tone. But I'm guessing they are for the Year of the X Canthan New Year type stuff.
A new title track (keeping this one unnamed for now, but looks interesting), I'm sure someone else will find it and post it later.
Year of the X strings (for Canthan New Year)
3rd b-day present strings
